ANALYSIS OF TURN TAKING IRREGULARITIES IN SAME-SEX AND MIXED-SEX CONVERSATION ON THE TALK RADIO : A CONVERSATION ANALYSIS APPROACH.

Abstract
This study is about turn taking irregularities in same-sex and mixed-sex conversation. The aims of this study are to find out how is the pattern of turn taking irregularities in this case overlaps and interruptions produced by the participants in same-sex and mixed sex conversation, and to find out the function of significant features from the participants' turns in term of minimal responses and hedges in same-sex and mixed-sex conversation.
This study uses conversation analysis as the methodology. There are 3 participants on this study. A female host, a female listener, and a male listener. Therefore, the interactions are divided into two, same-sex and mixed-sex conversation. The procedures of data collection are searching the English talk radio program on the radio waves in Surabaya, recording the interaction of talk radio on RRI Pro I FM, and transcribing the data by adapting the transcription convention. Then, the steps in technique of data analysis are finding out the pattern of interruptions on the data transcription, classifying the overlaps into transitional and nontransitional, and finding out their pattern, finding out the function of significant features (such as minimal responses, hedges, etc.) appearing in participants' turns, and making conclusion.
Based on the data analysis, the findings exhibit several patterns of turn taking irregularities, which indicates different functions: Interruptions in mix-talk conversation indicating the dominance of male speaker, but overlaps in the same-sex conversation indicating the next speaker's supports and encouraging the current speaker to continue. And the last finding is about significant features: there are some utilizing hedges and minimal responses which have different functions such as expressing uncertainty and showing the attention.
