Abstract

This study particularly refers to the language phenomena occur in modem mass media, i.e. code mixing in magazine's articles "Spice!". As girls magazine originally comes from Indonesia, it is not an obstacle for Spice! to use an international language and mix it with Indonesian and local languages especially Jakartan, in the articles. Since, this study is intended to find out what kinds of code mixing used in articles of Spice! and how those kinds of code mixing applied in articles of Spice!. Through this study, the writer expects that the findings can be used as part of extending reading deals with the language phenomena of code mixing, as one of the consideration to present mixed language in modern mass media, and also as a reference for further studies. The writer analyzes the data by applying code mixing theories by Fasold (1984), Suwito (1983), and Kachru (1978). In this way, this study uses qualitative method. The steps of data collection are: reading an edition of Spice! published in May 2007 as a representation of Spice! in general, selecting the sentences containing code mixing, and categorizing the sentences based on the types of code mixing. While the steps of data analysis are: categorizing the data based on the theories, tabulating the data, interpreting the findings, and drawing a conclusion.
