Abstract

Background. Mucosal surface is one of port de entry organism as bacteria, candida, virus. Candida can colonize mucosal surface in healthy people and considered to be commensal organim that can also become an opportunistic pathogen when the host fails to control it. One of them is Candida glabrata. Clinically C. glabrata is 72% resistant to fluconazole. An alternative solution have to be done toward oral mucosa which is effective inhibit candida colonization. Lactofferin is cation iron-binding glycoprotein that have an ability as antifungal. The antifungal potencies of Lactoferrin toward C. glabrata could be identified by determining Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimal Fungicidal Concentration (MFC). Aim. This study is aimed to prove antifungal potencies by identifying Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimal Fungicidal Concentration (MFC) of Lactoferrin toward C. glabrata. Method. This study is an experimental laboratories through research design of The Post Test Only Control Group Design by using C. glabrata cultured upon (SDB) Sabouraud Dextrose Broth medium and diluted according to the standard Mc.Farland 1,5 x 108 CFU/ml by treating concentration Lactoferrin 0,15%, 0,3%, and 0,6% and each of it was given 0.05 ml C. glabrata and cultured upon nutrient agar medium. Result. In the lactoferrin concentration 0,3% inhibit C. glabrata and in the concentration 0,6% there are no colonization of C. glabrata growth. Conclusion. Lactoferrin has an antifungal potency toward C. glabrata. The MIC shows in concentration of 0,3% and MFC shows in concentration of 0,6%.
