Abstract

Schizophrenic patients often require continuous care for a lifetime. The family plays a role in early detection, healing process and recurrence prevention. A patient with mental disorder is a part of family members. Family is the primary support system that provides direct care to every healthy and ill individuals. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between knowledge of the family care in taking care family members with schizophrenia. This was an analytic descriptive study using cross-sectional approach. The population was a whole family of schizophrenic patients at Sejahtera ward, Dr. Soetomo Hospital, with total sample of 20 respondents. In this study, the independent variable was family knowledge and the dependent variable was family task in treating the family member with schizophrenia. Data were collected using questionnaire. Data were analyzed with Spearman Rho statistical test with a significance level of p < 0.05. Spearman Rho test revealed p = 0.000. This suggests that there was correlation between family knowledge and family task in treating family member with schizophrenia. Family task in treating family member with schizophrenia is highly correlated with the level of knowledge, since knowledge must be in line with the support system of patients with schizophrenia. Future studies should observe other factors that affect family task in treating family members with schizophrenia.
