Abstract

News portal is one of daily digital news or publication media that is distributed from the journalists to the readers. The journalists have to consider the cohesive devices because it is very important to connect the words and sentences especially in their news article. This study aims to identify the cohesive devices with their functions that used in Kompas.com news articles. This study uses types of cohesion proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976) to explore the use of cohesive devices themselves. It is qualitative research since it is descriptive: describing the use of cohesive devices and their frequency occurrences which are contained in articles. The data of this study were two articles about Joko Widodo’s policy published on 19th January and 8th March 2015. This study produces several main findings. First, all types of cohesive devices occur except collocation, which reference type becomes the most frequently occurred in grammatical cohesion. Grammatical cohesion is more dominant than lexical cohesive devices because the tendency to utilize more grammatical cohesion may relate to the encoder’s knowledge of applying cohesive devices. Third, collocation is the least or none used type of cohesive devices. It indicates that the encoder of the articles either prevented making mistakes in applying this collocation type of lexical cohesion or did not know how to select the word for keeping the good reputation of Kompas.com media itself.
