Abstract

Struggle becomes inseparable part of people's life. Every people experience struggle in their life not only adult but also child and adolescent as well. Miles' struggle to find a meaningful life becomes the main issue in John Green's book entitled Looking for Alaska. This study discusses about how Miles' struggle to find a meaningful life portrays in plot, characterization and irony also how Miles' understanding about his meaningful life. New Criticism is the approach that the writer uses in this study and Close Reading as the method. In the end, Miles’ struggle to find a meaningful life can be revealed through the plot of the story. In the plot of the story, Miles characterization and the linguistic device which is Irony can be revealed as well. It becomes the proof that plot, characterization and irony as linguistic device are working together to built the theme. Miles’ understanding of his meaningful life is his life becomes more colorful because he finally realized what he was looking for was a little thing called love.
