Abstract

The phenomenon of Islamic Mataram heritage culture on traditional traders in Yogyakarta Special region showed a dichotomous situation, the presence of some strong Islamic cultural norms on one side and the existence of violations and deviations of several different Islamic cultural norms on the other side. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the Islamic Mataram cultural heritage of traditional traders in Yogyakarta Special Region according to Islamic norms and the relationship between the culture and the selection of business finance and merchant’s welfare. The approach used in this study is a phenomenological approach. The data were collected using in-depth interview, observation, and documentation method. Analysis data used a qualitative analysis, synthesis and shariah analysis. This research was conducted in three Mataram heritage traditional markets of Yogyakarta special region, namely Gentan, Kota Gede and Pleret. The respondents were the merchants of those markets. The results showed that according to six Islamic cultural norms (Qaradawi, 1997), there are three Islamic cultural norms obeyed by all respondents. Thus, there are three other Islamic cultural norms which were disobeyed by six respondents. Among those six respondents, the level of welfare was one person in the category of muzaki, and the other five respondents were in the category of mustahik. Meanwhile, out of thirteen respondents who obey Islamic cultural norms, there are only four people in the category of mustahik, and the others were in the category of muzakis. The synthesis analysis found that there were relationship between the the age of respondents and Islamic culture, between the the market location and the Islamic culture, and between the Islamic culture and the respondent’s welfare. This study suggested that in order to establish and build an Islamic Mataram cultural heritage of traditional traders in Yogyakarta Special Region, there is a need of participation and commitment of umaro, starting from the top leader, (in the context of Yogyakarta Special Region), is the Sultan, who also acts as the governor of Yogyakarta Special Region. It would highlight and revitalize the meaning of Sultan, a leadership award for Yogyakarta, as Senopati ing Alaga Hadrat Panatagama Khalifatullah. There is also requirement for the role and commitment of ulama, the religious and community leaders, to educate, understanding, and preach the practice of Islam holistically or “syamil”, not only as Syarii belief and practice but also as Syarii mu’amalah.
