Abstract
The title of this paper may sound promotional, but it is by no means a paper promoting a particular dictionary. This paper illustrates the different features of three monolingual learner dictionaries (MLDs) and tries to help English language teachers in deciding which dictionary they should or should not buy. The three MLDs are the Oxford Advanced Leamer 's Dictionary fifth edition (OALD5) (Hornby, 1995), the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary eight edition (OALD8) (Turnbull, 20 lO), and the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary third edition (CALD3) (Good, 2008).
