Abstract

This paper has shown that it is necessary for teachers to know what their information needs are when deciding whether or not to buy a particular dictionary. We can consider a dictionary as a tool which is designed for a particular purpose. The OALD8 is a tool to assist in text prod uction. The CALD3 is a tool to assist in preparing for Cambridge ESOL exams. We should also realize that the functions of a dictionary are (still) limited. For some types of infom1ation needs, we might need another tool, such as corpus software or websites.
