Abstract

Sweet represents the quality of taste pleased by human beings since the birth. However, if the consumption of sucrose in the diet is excessive, it can change the calcium balance of the body. Both the lower density and the lower mechanical strength are found in tibia and femur of animals which are consuming sucrose with high concentration. The diet of high sucrose can also cause the change of bone characteristics. The experiment used 21 days-age of male wistar rat, which were divided into four groups, each group consisted of 8 rats. Group I got 15 % sucrose diet, group II 30 %, group III 43 % and group IV got the standard diet. Six weeks after treatment, these rats were killed by decapitation, after previously anesthetized with ether. The lower incisor were separated from jaw, the mass of each fraction was weighted. Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) in mg/g was used to determine the concentration of calcium in wistar's tooth and jaw. The result showed that the lowest concentration of calcium in tooth was group III (sucrose 43 %). In jaw, the lowest concentration of calcium in group III was also sucrose 43 %. While the result of One Way Anava test indicated that there were significant differences between group of treatment toward the content of calcium either tooth or jaw (P < 0.05). Tukey HSD (Honestly Significance Difference) test indicated that there was a significant difference at group of diet of sucrose 30 % and 43 % in jaw, while there was a significant difference at group of diet of sucrose 43 % in tooth. The result concluded that the increased concentration of sucrose in diet could affect the decreased content of calcium in tooth and jaw of wi star rats.
