Abstract

This research, in general, will explain about Muhammadiyah intervention on the marriage tradition of Gorontalo, the altered cultural aspects as a result of the intervention, and whether the changes result in social conflict or new balance, This research, specifically, aims at obtaining clear description of the intervention of Muhammadiyah on marriage tradition of Gorontalo, and illustrating the procession of marriage tradition of Gorontalo, marriage performed by Muhammadiyah people, and mixed marriage between local people with Gorontalo tradition and Muhammadiyah people. This is a descriptive research. The collected data are explained qualitatively. Interview and field observation is the technique of data collection. The validity of data is obtained by some techniques: (a) triangulation, rechecking the validity of certain data by comparing them with other data from other sources; (b) continuous participation with research subjects to guarantee the accuracy of the data, and (3) pal-discussion, that is discussing with friends who understand the research subjects. The data were gained from the informants comprised of cultural figures, spokesmen (Utolia), local public figures, and Muhammadiyah leaders. The result of the research showed that in marriage tradition of Gorontalo, Muhammadiyah intervention had taken place. Such intervention is reflected in the procession of marriage that had been altered, especially among Gorontalo people residing in Gorontalo city. The first stage of marriage tradition of Gorontalo is informal meeting (modulohupa) which formerly comprised of three, stages and performed in three meetings; now (year 2002) this first stage has been altered to only two stages and performed in one meeting. The pre-engagement, asking one's hand (tolobalango) that formerly performed in six stages with six meetings has been altered to only three stages with one meeting. The performance of engagement (mopotilantahu) is dependent on the agreement between the two parties. The marriage stage (moponika) which previously performed in five stages, now performed in three stages namely marital contract performance (mongakaji), nullification of ritual ablution (molornela taluhu tabia), and sitting in stage (rnopopipidu). The performance of taking the bride (modelo) from the house of the bride's parents to the house of the bridegroom's parents and vice versa on the day of marriage is dependent on the agreement between the two parties. The feeding stage (mopotamelo) has not been performed anymore. In after-marriage stage namely three days after the date of the ceremony, the bride would be taken to the house of the bridegroom's parents and after three days there, the bridegroom would be taken back to the house of the bride's parents; basically both local people with Gorontalo tradition and Muhammadiyah people perform this stage. The procession of the marriage is fully performed with poem-like recital (tujaqi) by spokesmen (utolia) both from the bride and the bridegroom sides. These all processions, principally, have already been accepted by Gorontalo people. The living pattern after marriage among the Gorontalo people in Gorontalo city generally follows uxorilocal system (living in the house of the wife's parents). However it is possible that the wife live in the house of her husband's parents (virilocal) in case that the husband is single son or the parents of the husband is economically better than the parents of the wife. It is also possible that the couple do not live in their parents' house but live in the place where they work (neolocal).
