Abstract

This laboratory experimental study using The Post-test Only Control Group Design was aimed to identify the influence of soybean extract administration, compared to conjugated estrogen administration, on bone density. Experimental animals used in this study were two months old female Rattus norvegicus rats of Sprague-Dawley strain. Those animals were randomly divided into 5 treatment groups and were subjected to treatment as follows: conjugated estrogen of 0.02 mg/2m1 aquadest was given per oral to Group 1; soybean extract of 5.04 mg/2 ml aquadest, 2.52 mg/2 ml aquadest, and 1.26 mg/2 ml aquadest were respectively given per oral to Group 2, 3 and 4; and 2 ml aquadest was given per oral to control group (Group 5). Treatment was repeated for 15 times. After 12 weeks, bone density measurement was undertaken at metaphysical part of femoral bone of those experimental animals using ultrasound densitometer DBM Sonic 1200. Data were presented descriptively and analyzed using variant and regression analysis. Results showed that the administration of soybean extract and conjugated estrogen could increase bone density, and it was found that soybean extract dose of 2.48 � 5.01 mg/2 ml aquadest was similar to conjugated estrogen dose of 0.02 mg/2ml in increasing bone density.
