Abstract

Coral reef ecosystem is one of the biggest and the oldest ecosystem in the world. It takes million years forming it and it contains very rich and special varieties of underwater living things. Coral reef also bring so many banefits for the ecosystem surround it, such as for breeding, nursery and feeding ground for thousands under water creatures. But the fragile existence of coral reef is not quietly safe because it can be harmed by the environmental factor, such as sedimentation. The research aimed at knowing the effect of sediment rate to the growth development of the coral Acropora nobilis and Acropora formosa and their’s zooxanthellae’s density. It had done on September, 2011 until February, 2012 at Pasir Putih beach , Situbondo, East Java. The measuring for the growth quality data include length of coral fragment, the number of coral branches and the density of zooxanthellae. First of all, the data (length of coral fragment and zooxanthellae’s density) were analyzed their normality distribution by Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. For parametric data if it’s normal, then analyzed it’s significancy by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and continued by Duncan test at level 0,05. For non parametric data (number of coral branches) will be analyzed with Kurskal-Wallis test and continued by Mann-Whitney test at significance level 5%. The result showed that sedimentation is significantly influencing the length of coral fragment and the number of coral branches, but not for the reduction of zooxanthellae’s density.
