Abstract

Zinc (Zn) is included in the trace element, the element contained in the body in very small quantities and is absolutely necessary for maintaining good health. Zinc may also increase linear growth birth. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of zinc supplementation on Chronic Energy Malnutrition in third semester pregnant women evaluated on birth weight and length. This study was conducted by Randomized Pre Test-Post Test Control Group Design with a double-blind treatment. Samples were obtained from Chronic Energy Malnutrition in third semester pregnant women, divided into two groups. One group was treated with zinc supplementation and the other one was treated with placebo (as a control). Number of samples are 32 people with the details of 16 people in the treatment group and 16 in the control group. Infant anthropometric measurements (weight and length of the baby) was conducted in the two times measurements, at birth and after the baby is six months old. The results showed that there were differences between treated and controlled group on birth weight and length. Both birth weight and length of the infant were greater in the treated group than the control group (p = 0.00). In conclusion, Zinc supplementation was treated on third semester pregnant women may improve linear growth of infants.
