Abstract

A hospital’s employees have potential risk to be infected by HIV/AIDS when they are working. Being infected by HIV is a work related desease caused by risky working relationship to almost all employees at the hospital. HIV can be widespreading because of minor working accident done by a health practitioner in the hospital. Therefore, several efforts on Occupational Health and Safety of Hospital ( OHSH ) are required to provide health and safety condition for patients, employees, and visitors. This qualitative study used 37 people in OHSH team, Infection Control team, and structural authorities at RSUD Prof. Dr. Soekandar, Mojokerto Regency. From the results of this study, data on the application of efforts to control HIV infection was obtained and it was done through planning, organization, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation processes. The efforts to control HIV were done based on control hierarchy such as eliminating patients who were infected, technical efforts, administration, and the use of personal protective equipments. However, the disadvantages of the efforts done were that HIV test to risky employees had not been done and there were not follow-up actions if they were determined to be HIV positive. From the results of analysis in this study, a model to control HIV infection was recommended to facilitate the hospital’s management in implementing OHSH program and understanding instruction and coordination flow in controlling HIV infection. The model to control HIV infection was recommended to be implemented as soon as possible at RSUD Prof. Dr. Soekandar, Mojokerto Regency. In applying the model , this study recommends the hospital in order to prepare Provider from OHSH team and conduct HIV test to its employees. Strong commitment from management of the hospital to prepare a Standard Operating Procedure on the handling after exposure and follow up action to HIV positive employees will be required.
