Abstract

The process of learning and memory, are two processes that are important in determining intelligence in which both processes are greatly influenced by the quality of the brain. Factors that affect the quality of the brain, especially during growth include genetic factors, nutrition, environment and early stimulation for example is physical activity. The aim of this study was to explain that the intensity of swimming exercise on young white mice affect memory retention. This research was The Randomized Post Test Only Control Group Design. 40 male rats (Rattus norvegicus strain wistar), age 1 to 1.5 months, body weight 60-100 grams were divided randomly into 4 groups that each group consisted of 10 rats. The control group was the group given aqueous environment for 4 weeks. Treatment group was the group with a given form of swimming exercise with a low intensity (load 3% of body weight), moderate intensity (load of 6% of body weight) and high intensity (weight 9% of body weight). Each treatment was given once a day with a time 1 minute and 45 second, 3 sets with rest period 3 times exercises for 4 weeks. The results of this research is, memory retention between groups on day 4, the retention of memory in the control group obtained a mean (65.00 ± 31.38)%, in the treatment group 1 (low intensity) was (64.99 ± 37.84)%, in treatment group 2 (moderate intensity) was (37.96 ± 36.11)% and in the treatment group 3 (high intensity) was (30.56 ± 26.68)%. Independent t test result, there were significant differences between groups of control with treatment 3 (p=0.020) and group of treatment 1 with treatment 3 (p=0.037). Thus, the conclusions of this study is low and moderate intensity swimming exercise has no effect on memory retention, while the high intensity exercise lowers memory retention in young white rats.
