Abstract

Dyslipidemia including hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor for the development of premature atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease complications. Many epidemiological studies support the involvement of oxidative stress in pathogenesis and progression of many diseases such as hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate cholesterol-reducing effect and antioxidant activity as well as ethanol extract and ethyl acetate fraction of alang-alang (Imperata cylindrica) towards white rat's (Rattus norvegicus) some lipid profile (total cholesterol, LDL and HDL) and hepatic antioxidant enzyme (SOD) treated with high cholesterol diet. Ko was treated with standart diet, K1; with hypercholesterol diet, K2; with hypercholesterol diet and provided with ethanol extract Imperata cylindrica 15 mg/200g weight of rat/day, K3; with hypercholesterol diet and provided with ethyl acetate fraction Imperata cylindrica 15 mg/200g weight of rat/day. In conclusion, both of intake of ethanol extract and ethyl acetate fraction of Imperata cylindrica decreases the total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and SOD. Ethanol extract of alang-alang 15mg/200g weight of rat/day has a higher hypocholesterolemic effect compared with ethyl acetate fraction alang-alang 15mg/200g weight of rat/day, while ethanol extract 15mg/200g weight of rat/day and ethyl acetate fraction alang-alang 15mg/200g B has the same antioxidant effect
