Abstract

This study is about the entrepreneurship of street vendors of Soto Madura, which is an increasing phenomenon that can be considered as a result of many factors. As immigrants in the city of Surabaya, Madurese people generally work in the informal sector such as street vendors of Soto Madura. This paper seeks to explain how the participants’ entrepreneurial spirit has emerged and how this entrepreneurial spirit is related to their interpretation of Islamic teachings. This descriptive qualitative research is conducted in the sub district of Rungkut Surabaya. For a deeper understanding of the reasons of their hard working and how Islamic teachings upon work have influenced their entrepreneurial spirit, in-depth interviews and direct observations were conducted with six (6) participants of street vendors of Soto Madura. As a result, the soil of their origin which is not fertile enough to make a major agricultural producer and the limited other economic opportunities which led to chronic unemployment and poverty are considered as major factors which lead the participants to work hard to improve their economic condition. Their hard working is also the result of a combination of economic rationality and Islamic work ethics that consider the accomplishment of whatever work to support oneself and one’s family is as worthy as the performance of religious duties classified as obligatory.
