Abstract

Pornography is, ultimately, only defined by the culture in which it is found. It tests the limits of what a society deems obscene. In this regard, pornographers must constantly face gatekeepers, which regulate the dissemination of their product. It has been said that when a new communication technology emerges, pornographers will be the first to utilize it. It will be shown that, because of societal gatekeepers, pornography perpetuates technological evolution. Pornographys uses of new technologies and media fall into the media ecological paradigm of unintended consequences. Pornographers take advantage of these new media as a response to the inadequacies of current communication technology. From this perspective, the following article will explore the conceptualization of the pornographic and its role in the evolution of technology. From the birth of the printed word to the digital age, pornographys presence has been hard to deny, but by looking at its progression via its media channel, the reason for its ubiquity will become apparent.
