Abstract

This research studied about how Kompas and Republika packaging image of candidates in the president-vice president debate of 2009 general election? This question is important because media has capability to select the facts, select the issues, assert and eliminate the news parts, and directing the news that create image of specific aspect of public. From the problem above the researcher wanted to know how Kompas and Republika packaging the image of president-vice president candidates in 2009 general election. The researcher also wanted to see the language, words, clause, sentences, or correlation between paragraph that used by Kompas and Republika. It is important to know how Kompas and Republika give meaning to the event of president-vice president debate of 2009 general election therefore it will be considered as has implication with public understanding. Related with that matter, the researcher based it on social construction theory of Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann as the basic for this research analysis. Therefore framing analysis method of Gamson and Modigliani was the relevant method to be used as the analysis method of news text that related with candidate�s image in the reporting of president-vice president debate of 2009 general election. This research result was Kompas imaged Jusuf Kalla (JK) as the calm, concrete and promising candidate. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) was imaged as slow, less concrete and ambiguous candidate. While Megawati was imaged as less concrete, floating, and tend to be normative in the debate. Kompas tend to recommend JK as the candidate who is reasonable to be a president. While Republika imaged SBY and JK as smarter than Megawati therefore they were considered as reasonable to be a president. On the contrary Megawati was considered as unreasonable to be a president. While the packaging of vice president candidate�s image, Kompas imaged Wiranto as the candidate who was expressive and calm than Boediono that was imaged as always give promises and Prabowo was imaged as bemusing candidate. Therefore Wiranto was the candidate who reasonable to be a vice president. While Republika packaged the three of vice president candidates as candidates who could not held good debate and did not mastering the state concepts. Therefore the three of candidates were unreasonable to be a vice president.
