Abstract

Purpose To determine the serum uric acid levels at various levels of diabetic retinopathy and determine whether there is a correlation between serum uric acid levels with the level of diabetic retinopathy. Methods Analytical Observational study in 32 patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus was conducted at Ophthalmologys Outpatient Clinic. Baseline serum uric acid concentration, age, sex, glycemic control, blood pressure, duration of diabetes based on history, height and weight measurements to determine obesity, and blood pressure were analyzed to determine their contribution to diabetic retinopathy. Result Ophthalmic examination and seven fields fundus photograph examination. Severity of diabetic retinopathy was grading by ETDRS classification, then divided into 3 group. A1C measured to determine glycemic control with p=0,807 (p>0,05), Obesity analysis with p=0,359 (p>0,05). Patients with increase in severity of DR positively correlation with blood pressure history with p=0,011 (p<0,05). Serum uric acid were measured by enzymatic colorymetric method and the statistic was analyzed by Spearman�s correlation. The result of this study showed positive correlation ( rs = 0.321) but showed no statistical significance correlation between serum uric acid concentration with each group of severity of diabetic retinopathy with p=0.073 (p>0,05). Conclusion Serum uric acid concentration is not correlation with each group of severity of diabetic retinopathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus
