Abstract

this descriptive type of study is try to understand the lives of women, especially the experience of women with off-farm works in rural area. the aims of this study are three fold. there are 1) to identify the social characteristics of off-farm works in rural area; 2) to see to what extent the contribution of women to their families' lives and 3) to identify the problems of developing the works of women outside agricultural sector in rural area. the result of this study shows that the majority of women with off-farm works are those who are married. the range of their age is between 16-64 years old. the types of off-farm works done by women are those categorized as informal works, most of them located at home. almost all of the women interviewed said that they work less than 7 hours per day without any assistance. most of them chose the works because the location are at home so that they are able to combine their works with the domestic's tasks. almost all of them got the skills from their parents, their relatives or neighbours. it can be said that the majoruty of women with off-farm works come from the poor families with many children. although women earn small money but their contributions are very important for the household's expenses, most of their contribute more than 50%. to compare with farm works, women earn more money from off-farm works. finally, this study indicates that there is a possibility to develop the off-farm works done by women because they have already got the skills. it should be noted, however, that according to them the most suitable off-farm works for women are the types of works which are located at home.
