Abstract
Phyllanthus niruri Linn. is empirically used as antimalarial drug in some countries (e.g. Indonesia, Bahama, Brazil and Haiti). Methanol extract of Phyllanthus niruri Linn. was used to study antimalarial effect using in vivo model, Peter's test (The -I-Day Suppressive Test o/Blood Schizontocidal Action).
Female mice weighing 20 -30 g was used in this experiment. Blood from donor mouse with parasitaemia ~ 20% were diluded in alceivers medium (1: 3) and PBS were added so that each 0,2 ml parasite suspension contains 107 infected red blood cells. Each mouse received 0,2 ml parasite suspension intraperitoneally.
The plant extract was suspended with 0,5% CMC Na. The doses ranging between 50 -1000 mg/kg body weight. The extract was administered daily from initial day after infection for four days by oral route. In the Do -D7 blood were taken from tail and then stained with Giemsa, and parasitised red cells were counted.
Treated animals showed a lower parasitemia compared with untreated animals. This extract was active againts Plasmodium berghei, it showed inhibition up to 62%. EDso value was calculated from log dose/probit activity. EDso of methanol extract of Phyllanthus niruri Linn. was 684,69730 mglkg body weight.
