Abstract
School aged children still have low quality of health and personal hygiene behavior, such as hand washing with soap, cutting nails, brushing teeth, taking a bath, and shampooing. It may lead them to be suspect to various disease. Based on preliminary studies at MIS Al-Amin Sawah Pulo Surabaya, >50% of 56 students have minimum personal hygiene. Storytelling with puppets cardboard is one of the most fundamental way to share knowledge, experiences, and foster interaction with children. The aims of the research were to analyze the influence of story telling with cardboard puppets to increase personal hygiene behavior in school aged children. The research used pre-experimental design (one group pre test–post test design). The population was students 3th and 4th grade in MIS Al Amin Sawah Pulo Surabaya. Sample of 34 respondents were taken by purposive sampling. The independent variable in this study was story telling with cardboard puppets, while the dependent variable were knowledge, attitude, and action about personal hygiene. Data were collected by using questionnaire and observation. Data were analyzed using wilcoxon signed ranks test with level significance α ≤ 0,05. Result showed that story telling with cardboard puppets had influence to increase behavior. With level significance of knowledge p=0,000, attitude p=0,008, and action p=0,000. This study concluded that story telling with cardboard puppets has influence on personal hygiene behavior in school aged children. It is suggested for school health nurses to use story telling method to increase awareness about personal hygiene since early age so it can create healthy life and prevent children from many diseases. Further research, story telling method can be use for other health education for school aged children.
