Abstract

The failure of fixed partial denture is most frequently caused by secunder caries (18%), so it needs luting cement that possessed good antibacterial properties and low solubility for attached the fixed partial denture to the abutment teeth. Purpose : The purpose of this study was to compare the antibacterial activity to Streptpococcus mutans and solubility of three different dental luting cements for attached the fixed partial denture. Materials and Methods : A split ring mould was fabricated for the preparation of specizemen discs they were 5 mm in diameter and 1,5 mm thick for antibacterial activity test, and 5 mm in diameter and 3 mm thick for solubility test. All specimens were manipulated according to the manufacturer’s instructions and subjected to antibacterial activity and solubility test. Data were analysed statistically with ANOVA test. Results : The result for antibacterial activity test showed that polycarboxylate luting cement had the highest antibacterial activity, glass ionomer luting cement had the same antibacterial activity with resin based luting cement. Solubility test showed that polycarboxylate luting cement had the highest solubility, then the glass ionomer luting cement, and the lowest solubility was resin based luting cement. Conclusion : Polycarboxylate luting cement had the highest antibacterial activity compared with the others because of it’s ability to produce zinc. Resin based luting cement had the lowest solubility because it had HEMA substance in it.
