A SYNTACTICAL ANALYSIS OF MODIFIERS IN SOME ARTICLES IN NEWSWEEK.
Skripsi thesis, Universitas Airlangga.
Abstract
Concerning on the discussion ofNelson Francis, there are two components of a structure of modifications. They are head and modifier. This research uses syntax theory to analyse modifiers. It is to examine the use of modifiers in authentic writing by describing the kinds of modifiers, what the modifiers modify in this case the heads, and their positions. The writer counts the frequency of the occurrence of the modifiers to find out which types of these are mostly found in the source of data. The writer takes three different selected articles in Newsweek magazine as her source of data. The first is about technology, the second is about society and the arts, and the last is politics. The data from the three articles are analyzed based on Nelson Francis's theory of structure of modification. She studies different topics ofthe selected articles thoroughly. To collect the data, the writer uses qualitative approach. She does not start with a hypothesis and does not make any generalisation.
From the analysis, there are various modifiers, heads, positions and the structure of modification. Besides single words, there are phrases and clauses that appeared as heads and modifiers. The single words cover nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and function words. Function words as single word modifiers are mostly found in the selected articles, that make up about 33.2% of the total. Nouns as heads are also mostly found. They have 49 %. While the structure ofmodification which consists of function words and nouns have the highest number of occurrence.
