Abstract

Background: Establishing a person’s identity can be a difficult process, DNA and fingerprint are the most common techniques, allowing fast ands secure identification processes. However these techniques can not always be applied. In some cases, it is necessary use palatal rugae pattern as an alternative technique for identification, because palatal rugae do not change during individual lifetime, unique, and stable during the person’s growth. Tengger population has an endogamy marriage tradition. So that it is a relatively homogeneous society. Therefore it was asumed that there would be a strong correlation between generations in the palatal rugae pattern in a family. Purpose: The aim of this study is to prove that palatal rugae pattern could be used as a determinant of inheritance towards Tengger population. Method: This research is an observational-analytic. Collecting data of the palatal rugae pattern towards Tengger population is taken directly by scoring using alginate and thickening using the pencil. Results: Result of this research showed unsignificant correlation with α > 0.05 between the first until the third generations. It means, there is no difference of palatal rugae pattern between parents and their next generations towards Tengger population. Conclusion: Palatal rugae pattern proved to be inherited.
