Abstract

Melasma is common skin disease especially in tropical country as Indonesia. Women in middle age more often suffer from melasma. The prevalence in women of Latin is 4% -10% and increased up to 50% in pregnant women, while the prevalence in women Southeast Asia at 40%. Melasma is caused by many factors such as pregnancy,contraception oral combinations (COCs), sun exposure, and genetics. This study aims to determine the relationship between oral contraceptives combined with incidence of melasma in District Manyar Gresik. Cross sectional study performed in District Manyar Gresik. Data were taken by questionnaire were completed by 100 women using hormonal contraceptive. There were 31% respondents with melasma. There was relationship between duration of COCs with the incidence of melasma with p = 0,001. Onset was related with hormonal accumulation due to consumption of COCs with p = 0,002. The results suggest that, whilst accepted causes do affect onset of melasma, a combination of these factors often triggers this disorder.
