Abstract

Background: Menopause is transition period from reproductive stage to non-reproductive stage. Average ages of menopausal women is between 43-57 years. In menopausal women, occurs decrease of saliva flow. In prior study, gumcontaining- xylitol is able to increase saliva flow in elderly people. Purpose: The aims of this study are to determine the quantity of increased saliva flow in menopausal women and non-menopausal women after chewing gum-containing-xylitol and to prove function gum-containing-xylitol as a ingredient which may increase saliva flow. Methods: This study uses menopausal women and non-menopausal women as the subjects of this research. Unstimulated whole saliva was collected for 3 minutes. After that, they were asked to rest for 10 minutes. Then subjects were asked to chew gum-containing-xylitol 5 minutes and the stimulated saliva was collected for 3 minutes. Results: There was significant increase in saliva flow rate due to chewing gum-containing xylitol is about 0,3 ml/minute.
