Abstract

This study concerns I inguistic (i.e. phonological) phenomena within a religious context. It specifically investigates the concurrence of nasal assimilation and lengthening processes found in the principles of Qur'anic recitation (Tajwid) and attempts to formulate the phonological rules underlying the processes. The study. is particularly interesting because it reveals phonological phenomena in which nasal assimilation and lengthening processes occur synchronically-a distinctive occurrence which may only be found in Tajwid. The data collected for the study is in form 0 f Tajwid manuals 0 r guidelines a bout the correct method of Q ur'anic recitation, compiled by Tajwid scholars throughout the history and preserved until today. From the study conducted, the writer finds that there are several principles in Tajwid which contain nasal assimilation and lengthening processes occurring simultaneously: Iq/ab, Ikhfa' Haqiqi, Idgham bi Ghunnah, and Special Case of fbi becoming lIn! in Idg/zam Mutajaanisain. In sum, from all principles of Tajwid identified, there are two kinds of directional assimilation: progressive nasal assimilation and regressive nasal assimilation. By the extent, we a Iso find two types of assimilation: partial assimilation and total/complete assimilation. The nasal assimilation found in the Tajwid principles occurs synchronically with the lengthening processes, not separately. Here we also learn that lengthening is applicable not only when the affected segment shares the same place feature with the following segment, but also when the segments involved include nasality. If one of the conditions is not present, then the lengthening rule is not applicable.
