Abstract

Background: Burn pain is severe form of acute pain. The inadequate pain control can cause physicologic effect for burn patient. The adequate analgesic can help to reduce complications and contribute to faster healing. Prolonged analgesic used in burn patients potentially cause adverse drug reaction and drug interaction can occur due to polypharmacy. Objective: Identify analgesics usage and analyze potential DRP of analgesics in burn patients at Burn Unit GBPT Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya. Method: It was a prospective observational descriptive study using non random sampling and time limited sampling conducted from 4th March to 4th June 2016. The inclusion criteria was burn patients that hospitalized and treated with analgesic in that period. Result: The results showed that from 13 patients, men had greater prevalence than women in burn injury, most of them age between 16 and 64. Fire is common cause following with inhalation injury. Types of analgesic were used in this study: metamizole (100%), morphine (30.8%), tramadol (30.8%), ketorolac (23.1%), acetaminophen (15.4%), acetaminophen-acetylcysteine (7.7%) and ketoprofen (7.7%). Analgesics were used throughout the hospital stay, where intravena route is commonly used. In this study, patient still experienced moderate (92.3%) and severe (30.8%) pain. Two types of DRP were identified in this study: potential side effect and drug interactions. Conclusion: Intravenous metamizole was most commonly used analgesic in burn patient. Long term used of analgesic need to be reconsidered in burn patient. Good collaboration among health care team is needed to improve therapeutic outcome of analgesics.
