Abstract
A museum is one of tourism places that support education. In the museum, many collections are completed with label collections. Some of label collections are written in Indonesian (monolingual), while others are written in Indonesian and English (bilingual). Unfortunately, there are still several errors in bilingual label collections. In order to reveal the quality of label collections translation, this paper analysed translation errors on label collections at Museum Angkut Batu, Malang by mapping, categorizing and calculating the errors based on Pym’s theory of binary and non-binary errors. This study also utilized American Translators Association (ATA) framework of standardized error marking that consists of twenty two types of error. The data were collected from eight zones at Museum Angkut Batu, Malang and result in 42 label collections by using random sampling as the primary data. This study found 316 translation errors from the data analysed and the most significant error is grammar with 112 (35,44%) occurrences. The most significant error is in the active passive forms and the verb has an important impact in the meaning of the translation. The result of this analysis indicates that the binary error occurrences are closely related to the level of translators’ competence and give negative impact on overall quality of label collections.
