Abstract

Beauty is one of the most important aspects to a woman, both physical appearance and behaviour. These features are called the concept of beauty, which may have different definitions based on the culture of a certain society. Scott Westerfeld wrote a novel related to the concept of beauty entitled Uglies. The purpose of this study is to reveal the concept of ideal beauty presented in Uglies and also women’s reaction toward the oppression. The society members are highly oriented in physical beauty and grouping people based on their physical appearances. The concept of ideal beauty in this story becomes interesting because it can only be reached through plastic surgery; thus, it will be appropriate to apply beauty myth theory by Naomi Wolf in analyzing this novel. Besides, the writer also uses theory of ideology by Althusser to analyze both Repressive State Apparatus and Ideological State Apparatus that appear in the novel. Uglies shows the rejection and isolation that must be faced by women if they break the rules. Moreover, the women must bear the brain lesions caused by the plastic surgery while the men do not. It was founds that the government has an important role in creating the society’s ways of thinking, the government’s power to rule people make it become the authorities that decide the “good things” and “bad things”. The results indicate that government opressed women to do certain things so they would not rebel against the government and the prevailing system.
