Abstract

The aim of this research is to understand the types of code-switch that is used by the players of DotA 2 in Indonesia Region. This research is interesting because those players who code-switch prefers to use different language instead of their own mother language even though those switched code is available in their own dictionary. Hoffman stated that code-switch has divided into four types which are inter-sentential switching, intra-sentential switching, emblematic switching and establishing continuity. Moreover, Hoffman also stated the reasons of people to do code-switch which is used as a base theory for this research. Furthermore, the players actually know if the switched words are available in their own vocabulary but still using another language instead. To analyze those players, the researcher recorded a game played by people of Surabaya, especially in Airlangga University, because many Airlangga University students play DotA 2, the researcher will record a game first then interviewing some players by asking the reasons why they do code-switch. The result of this research is somewhat astonishing because the players use all types of code-switch which are Inter-sentential Switching, Intra-sentential Switching, Emblematic Switching, and Establishing Continuity and the most frequent one is Intra-sentential Switching, also their reasons is vary from expressing solidarity to expressing group identity. In conclusion the most frequent code-switch is Intra-sentential Switching and the reasons are mostly to strengthen a request or a command.
