Abstract
Theoretically it is often argued that there is strong relationship between diversification strategy and firm performance, It is furthermore suggested that differences exist among categories of diversification strategy with respect to average firm performance. Firms pursuing relatedconstrained or related-linked diversification strategy are often hypothesized to outperform those pursuing other categories.
Hypotheses on the relationship between diversification strategy and firm performance are developed, Using Rumelt categories of diversification strategy and Jensen's alpha performance measure this study tests empirically these hypotheses on 20 selected listed public diversified companies in Indonesia over the period 1992-1995.
Results indicate that contrary to the hypotheses developed above diversification strategy has no significant relationship to firm performance. Further, the findings show that the six categories of diversification strategy studied are equal in terms of average firm performance and there is no evidence that firms pursuing related-constrained or related-linked strategy generate superior performance over those pursuing other categories.
