Abstract
Background: Gingivitis is one of the periodontal disease that often occurs in the population as an inflammation of the gingiva that caused by plaque accumulation. Gingivitis clinnicaly present with a changes in color, contour, consistency, texture, and gingival bleeding. Risk assessment can distinguish the factors that determined the probability of periodontal disease and its severity, and influence future progression of the disease. Gingivitis affecting more than 75% of the population in the world. According to the data of RISKESDAS 2007, the prevalance of gingivitis in Indonesia to be as high as 96,58%. Availability of comprehensive and reliable data on oral disease on global scale based on recognised indicators, is still limited. Gingival index used for assessing the severity and quantity of gingival inflamation in individual patient or in population. Purpose: The aim of this study was to find out the severity of gingivitis in Dental Section of Public Health Service of Ketabang Surabaya in 2016. Method: A descriptive observational study with purposive sampling method with gingival index (GI). This study was perfomed on 100 patiens at the Dental Section of Public Health Serviceof Ketabang Surabaya, in a 7 working days. A periodontal probe is inserted to measure probing depth in labial of teeth 21, bucalof tooth 16, 26 teeth, and lingual of tooth 41, 36, 46 to see bleeding on probing. Result: Males have higher severity of gingivitis than females. The highest severity of gingivitis is in the early adolescent group (12-16 years old). Subject who had the level of education of high school and under, brush their teeth two times a day, and do not check their teeth to dentist, have a higher tendency of severity on gingivitis. Conclusion: The majority of the patients at the Dental Section of Public Health Service Ketabang Surabaya had moderate gingivitis based on the score of gingival index.
