Abstract

This study aims to discuss about the sibling death and its effects on the bereaved’s personality development also about the operation of Eros and Thanatos in Jandy Nelson’s novel The Sky is Everywhere. This novel depicts the main character’s grief of losing her sister. The issues that will be discussed within this thesis are sibling death and it effects toward Lennie’s personality development and about the operation of Eros as the life instinct and Thanatos as the death drive in Lennie’s character in the novel with Freudian Psychoanalysis. The theory of mourning suggested by Freud is used in order to show the way sibling death influences the main character’s personality development after experiencing the loss of the sibling. In addition, since this novel also depicts about the change of personality of the main character, therefore, as part of Psychoanalysis, the concept about Eros and Thanatos theory will be applied in the analysis as well. This concept is used in order to explain the operation of life instinct and death drive in Lennie’s character after the death of her sister since the death of sibling becomes the trigger or the drive that awoken these two instincts. Through the implement of the theory, the study discovers that sibling is one of the most important people in someone’s life because they have built a great and intimate bond between each other so that the death of the sibling will impact to the bereaved’s personality development. Furthermore, sibling death can also stimulate the elements of Eros and Thanatos as the life and death instinct that someone else within himself that can also influence someone’s personality and character.
