Abstract

The changed of milk quality can be affected by level of bacterial contamination in the milk. Bacteria that was used as indicators of hygiene sanitary is Escherichia coli. The presence of E. coli in milk can cause poor sanitation and hygiene of steet vendors. The purpose of this study is to measure the value of Most Probable Number of E. coli in milk sold by the street vendors in Jemursari, Surabaya. Milk samples were taken from five street vendors and one cattle farm in Wonocolo as a comparison. Most Probable Number method was used to determined the level of E. coli in contaminated milk. The results of the study showed all samples contaminated with E. coli and exceed the bacterial contamination limit assigned by Standarisasi Nasional Indonesia (SNI).
