Abstract
In the colonial era, to expand their influence and economy in the known world, the British embrace the practice of slavery in to their colonies in America. After free from the occupation, the slavery exist in several States. The white people continue their hegemonies over colored people in post-colonial era. The paper is an attempt to study Edward P. Jones’ The Known World through the Homi K. Bhabha’s concept of ambivalence. Ambivalence is form of multiple reaction of the colonized, they disapprove of the colonizer’s norm, yet they need to adopt it in order to survive. Therefore, this research try to understand the effect of slavery in post-colonial era which result in the creation of the ambivalence in Henry Townsend. His affection to his former master while he was a slave create an ambivalence in him. The writer try to analyze the ambivalence which occurred in the characters while he was in the position as a slave and a master. From the ambivalence depicted in the character of Henry Townsend, we will understand that his ambivalence in action toward his own kin, the colored people, will be disadvantage for those who against slavery.
