Abstract

This research is conducted in order to how the main character in the novel entitled The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate which was written by Jacqueline Kelly challenges the traditional gender roles. The novel sets a turn on late 19th to 20th century era. The author depicts the main character as the young ambitious girl aged 11 years old who has interests on a science and wants to change the perspectives of women to be different from one on another. Science has opened her eyes widely because there were many knowledge that she learned out of her daily activities which made her bored at that time. The text will be analyzed by using Beauvoir’s theory Feminist especially the Lived Experience. The method used is a qualitative approach and the data is collected from the novel The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate, journals and books to support the statements. In the result finds that there are several points which support the circumstances in which a shifting perception about women does exist. The main character in the story tries to challenge traditional gender by she studies a subject which in that era is an inappropriate to learn. Also, showing different perception and interest from other women in that era such as to do domestic choir by stating that she hates to do that. In her perception, women also have rights and opportunities to choose what they wanted to be.
