Abstract

This research is aimed to get information about equine heart rate, respiration rate, body temperature, and energy cost of locomotion (ECoL) of sound horses treated with laserpuncture. Four Thoroughbred horses were selected in this research. Standardize exercise test (SET) applied to all horses before and after treatment on a treadmill. Laserpuncture treatment applied in seven consecutive days with 50 J power output. A camera was placed to record the locomotion of the horses so it can be calculated to the energy cost of locomotion. SPSS 20 was used in the processing of statistics. Data of heart rate, respiration rate, and body temperature were taken at resting condition and after SET, before and after laserpuncture treatment. In this research, heart rate and ECoL showed significant result (p<0,05) after SET. Respiration rate and body temperature showed insignificant result after SET (p>0,05). In resting condition before SET, the heart rate and respiration rate give significant result whereas body temperature remain insignificant Heart rate is lower in horses after laserpuncture treatment. ECoL is higher in horse after laserpuncture treatment. Respiration rate is lowered after laserpuncture treatment in resting condition. Body temperature remains insignificant after laserpuncture treatment in resting condition and after SET. Heart rate was lower because rostral ventrolateral medulla is inhibited and physiological influence of nitric oxide on cardiovascular system. Respiration rate after SET was insignificant because of the locomotory-respiration coupling mechanism. Respiration rate was significant at resting condition because of laserpuncuture-mediated increasing cardiac output. Body temperature remain insignificant caused by environment temperature. Energy cost of locomotion gives significant result because of increasing amount of carnitine, glutathione and better cardiovascular condition induced by laserpuncture.
