Abstract

In this globalization era, gaining various information and knowledge is highly important. It is intended to prepare for what is going to happen next. Information about politics, economy, entertainment, sports, business, industry, trade and commerce can be found in mass media. Mass media, consisting of printed and broadcasted media, has become a necessity for people in learning and gaining kinds of information. That is the main reason why media companies which provide news from around the world are still exist. Newspaper, one of the printed media, has special ways to attract the readers. Not only provides actual, informative, and up-to-date news, newspapers is also published every day and has an authentic form. Newspapers provide information and general knowledge. Reading it daily will widen the scope of people’s knowledge which is an integral part of education and very useful especially for student. Newspapers can provide interesting things and ideas which can assist students in their learning process at school. Not only are the news itself that are beneficial for students, but it also develops their language skills and increases their word vocabulary. This aspect has become the strength of printed media compared to other media that use digital format visualization. One of the well-known printed media companies in Indonesia is Jawa Pos. Jawa Pos is a national newspaper which provides both national and international news. Through the leadership of Dahlan Iskan, Jawa Pos is internationally acclaimed and has achieved a lot of world awards in various categories. The existence of Jawa Pos newspaper gave the writer a chance to do internship there. The writer did her internship as an International News Reporter at Divisi Internasional or International Division in Jawa Pos newspaper started from 16th January 2017 until 12th February 2017. The writer faced several problems during his internship. The first problem was that he found it difficult to create interesting title and good opening paragraph on the first and second week of his internship. The editor told that his opening was plain and she suggested him to make it catchier. To overcome the problem, the writer read plenty news on Jawa Pos newspaper in order to know good examples of title and opening paragraph based on Jawa Pos style. He also consulted the problem to the editor. The second problem was he did not understand several difficult terms used in the news. The writer usually searched the meaning of those difficult terms and words on the internet. As the time went by, he was able to know the meaning of the words quickly and he could understand the news in a very short time. During the internship in Jawa Pos, the writer has got many useful experiences. He learned a lot about how to be a good translation journalist especially in the international news. The writer could apply his skill in translating the articles from English into Bahasa Indonesia because he had a responsibility to produce international news. In this matter, the writer also learned about journalistic process that included searching for news from foreign news agencies, combining news from different sources, translating news from English into Bahasa Indonesia with the proper grammar, and editing news by adding some improvisation to make the article more interesting. Not only got the experiences of being a good journalist, he also had chance to improve his soft skills in Jawa Pos, such as discipline, communication, integrity, and socializing. This matter made the writer feel proud and grateful for being a part of the biggest newspaper company in Indonesia. The writer hopes that Jawa Pos will always give opportunities for the interns, especially for student of English Diploma of Universitas Airlangga, to learn there.
