Abstract

These days, Indonesian people tend to read news from their smartphones. It means that electronic or online media, such as electronic newspaper, contains information for people to get to know international and national news which is faster to get and without any charge. Sometimes, the content of online newspaper can make readers confused with its information because of ambiguous words, phrases, and sentences in which it is known as lexical and structural ambiguity. This study intended to find similarities, differences, the type of ambiguity which is frequently found, and its cause occurred in the online news articles of The Jakarta Post and Antara News. There are 53 news articles from The Jakarta Post and 34 news articles from Antara News as the data of this study from November 1st until November 7th, 2016 in national news section in which it is related to the rally activities of Ahok’s case. To analyze the data, lexical and structural ambiguity by Hurford, Heasley and Smith’s theory was used. The results are 29 data of lexical ambiguity and 28 data of structural ambiguity from The Jakarta Post, 19 data of lexical ambiguity and 26 data of structural ambiguity from Antara News, there is two similarities and one difference from each lexical and structural ambiguity, structural ambiguity is frequently found, and the cause of lexical ambiguity is polysemy and structural ambiguity is equivocal phrasing.
