Abstract

Quentin Tarantino’s eighth film entitled “The Hateful Eight” creates some arguments about misogyny among movie critics. Throughout the film, the male characters are shown to physically and verbally abuse the only female antagonist named Daisy Domergue. In contrast, the other male antagonists receive less abusive treatment than Daisy. It is implied that misogyny can be addressed to any kinds of women including evil women and when it involves an evil woman, physical or verbal abuse are explicitly made to be looked like a legal thing because the evil woman deserves the treatments. This study aims to reveal misogyny in the excuse of gender equality by looking into the scenes where the male characters treat Daisy Domergue and how she is represented in the film. The main data, which is used for this study, is taken from the film’s scene screenshots. The screenshots are then analyzed based on the narrative and non –narrative aspects. This kind of method is commonly used to analyze a film. The problem in conducting this research is finding the theoretical framework and references. However, the result shows that misogyny lies behind gender equality excuse in this Tarantino’s latest film. This study is expected to be a reference for further research about misogyny in films.
