Abstract

One of the current issues being discussed in the present time Indonesia is about teacher’s performance. Nowadays, there are a lot of cases about the decreasing number of teachers’ responsibilities toward the students. Thus, this condition leads teachers to become more protective of their status, and it challenges them to maintain their identity in the society. It is through narrative as a media, a teacher can reveal the way to convey his life. One of the theories about narrative is proposed by Clandinin & Conelly, and this theory is divided into three commonplaces: temporality or continuity, sociality, and situation/places. The aim of the study is analyzing the three commonplaces in the story of a civil servant teacher, and the theme of personal experience narrative organized based on Clandinin & Conelly’s theory. The data was collected from the narrative of a civil servant teacher by means of interview. By using in depth-interview (open-ended), the subject participating in this study narrated some important events related to the topic in his life. The data was transcribed using Saymore and grouped on the basis Clandinin & Conelly’s three commonplaces of narrative. The result of this study shows that the three commonplaces were found in this civil servant teacher’s narrative. In addition, the most frequent existing aspects of three commonplaces are past event and social condition. Furthermore, the theme of the narrative examined in this study was concerned with teacher’s responsibilities.
