Abstract

This study aims to discuss about the main character, Werner Pfennig, who is a Nazi’s soldier in All the Light We Cannot See. This study analyzes the character’s attemps in overcoming his guilty feeling through his behavior. Characterization, conflict, and symbol become the focus of this study because they hold important role in identifying the events. New Criticisim Theory is used as the theory of this study, especially about conflict. This research used a descriptive method with new critical approach. With this method, the writer takes the data from Anthony Doerr’s novel All the Light We Cannot See. Journal, books and related studies are also used as references to analyze the issue. This study finds that conflicts and symbol hold significant role in making the whole story as a unity. Werner’s attempt in overcoming his guilty feeling is by redeemed his humanity. He commits treason and disobey Nazi’s order. After all of the conflicts that Werner has been through, his inability to defend his friend and save people’s life cause him feeling guilty and in order to overcoming it, Werner puts his life in danger by saving a resistance.
