Abstract

This study analyzed Illocutionary Acts in Barack Obama’s campaign speeches. The meaning of political speech can be shown by identifying the speaker’s Illocutionary Act. This study aims to identify Illocutionary Acts found in Barack Obama’s campaign speeches based on the functions, structures and find out the most dominant function of Illocutionary Acts used in Barack Obama’s campaign speeches. This study focused on the analyzing the functions of Illocutionary Acts purposed by Searle (1976), and the structure of Speech Acts purposed by Yule (1996). The result of this analysis showed that in the campaign speeches, Barack Obama contains all functions of Illocutionary Acts, such as Directives, Commissives, Representatives, Declaratives, and Expressives. Moreover, the most dominant function of Illocutionary Act used in Barack Obama’s campaign speeches is Representatives Act. Then from all functions above, Barack Obama’s campaign speeches contain Direct and Indirect Speech Act that the most structure of Speech Acts used is Direct Speech Act.
