Abstract

Heroes are recognized throughout our history since ancient times. They are the people who are well known for their heroic actions and significant contributions to a society. What many people do not know is the truth behind the journey of the hero. Many aspects of a hero’s journey can be analyzed, and one of those aspect is monomyth, the basic structure of a hero’s journey. In the novel Un Lun Dun by China Mieville, there are two heroines, namely Zanna and Deeba, portrayed in the novel as the main characters. These two heroines’ existence means that there are two monomyths to be anaylzed. This thesis aims to analyze these two monomyth structures and reveal who is the true hero of the story between the two main characters. This thesis uses the theory of monomyth as proposed by Joseph Campbell and divide the monomyth structure into three parts namely separation, initiation and return. This thesis uses qualitative method in analyzing the data collected by close reading. After analyzing the issue that is present in the article, the writer finds out that the monomyth structure of Deeba’s journey as one of the main characters fit more into the model of monomyth by Joseph Campbell than Zanna’s journey structure. Furthermore, as one of the main characters, Deeba showed more heroic traits than Zanna. So, the study concludes that Deeba is the true hero of the novel.
