Abstract
Most hypnotherapist do their work by using his/her linguistic skill. The words and sentences that are used by the hypnotherapist serve as a tool for him/her to modify his/her client behaviour or way of thinking. Hall (1997) believed that what the therapist does, including hypnotherapist, to make their works become more effective is by doing languaging. This research focuses on analyzing the suggestions used by hypnotherapist by using Hall’s (1997) therapeutic languaging theory. The participant of the research is one of the certified hypnotherapists in Surabaya. The research was conducted by analyzing the transcription of the hypnotherapy session by the hypnotherapist. From the research, the researcher found that the hypnotherapist used four out of the seven therapeutic languaging functions and the most used function is languaging as challenging construction. Those four functions were used in order to modify the subjects of the hypnotherapy’s feeling and idea about studying English in order to improve their proficiency.
