Abstract

This study aims to determine the influence of number of days on prescription refill towards medication adherence and cost in patients with diabetes mellitus at primary health care centre in North Surabaya. This study was a cross sectional study using accidental sampling. The adherence measurement method used was self-report method with Adherence to Refills and Medication Scale (ARMS) questionnaire. The cost measurement used a list of interview questions to determine the cost of diabetes mellitus patients. This study was conducted on 89 diabetes mellitus patients at primary health care centre in North Surabaya. The result was the number of days were ranged from 4 to 30 days. The results of the adherence measurement by the ARMS method resulted in a mean total score of 17.93 ± 5.97. While the largest cost incurred was the indirect cost which was the cost of productivity reduction is Rp. 28.895,19 ± 80.148,67. The analysis result using Spearman test between number of days and adherence showed p of 0.002 and r value of -0.322. While the analysis between number of days and total cost showed p value of 0.035 and r value of -0.224. The conclusion was there was significant influence of number of days on prescription refill towards medication adherence and there was significant influence of number of days on prescription refill towards the cost incurred by diabetes mellitus patients at primary health care centre in North Surabaya.
